Here is a nest hole of a snapping turtle, which was most likely raided by raccoons to eat the eggs. The hole is approximately 10 cm in diameter. Naturalist Matt says, “Yesterday we saw a female snapping turtle digging a hole here, laying her eggs, and then filling the hole. And she got back to the water. Last night raccoons raided this turtle nest and ate all the eggs.”  Matt adds, “ Eggs of snapping turtles look like ping pong balls and their eggshells are soft like leather” while holding a piece of broken shell between his thumb and index finger.  Feeding Relationships
