Bat (Up-Close) : Ms. Reynolds shows her four educational bats to the class.  Here is one of them. The picture shows that the bat spreads its wings using forelegs (its upper arms, forearms, and especially four-fingered hands; these bones look like human’s). Ms. Reynolds taught us that a bat’s hind paws look weird because the hind legs rotate 180 degrees at its hip.  These paws may help bats sleep hanging upside-down. Most people don’t like bats. Ms. Reynolds is saying, “Bats, flying mammals are really useful to humans.”  We’re pretty sure this bat is a little brown bat. The pic was taken at Thomas Savage Visitor Center, Fort Snelling State Park, St. Paul, MN, 051030.  More info on bats, click here.
