Here is a picture of two
common loons with a loon chick. The chick is riding on one of the parent's
backs because they are not strong enough to swim long distances. This picture
was taken at Leech Lake, Minnesota (Northern), on June 10, 2002. The loon is the
Minnesota state bird and Minnesota has the largest population of loons in the
