Earth Day

Earth Day, April 22, is a recent holiday in the
United States .  It was the brainchild of Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin , and was first observed in 1970.  The purpose of the holiday is to promote awareness of environmental problems and to encourage people to take better care of the planet.

On Earth Day thousands of people around the country volunteer to pick up trash, recycle, remove graffiti, and teach others about the environment.

The City of Minneapolis , for instance, sponsors a cleanup event:  < http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/news/20020321earthday.asp >
