Labor Day, and Schools Part
I: The
Beginning of The School Year (
October 10, 2002 )
We observe the national holiday "Labor Day 1)," the
first Monday in September, which this year was September 2nd.
"Labor Day" honors labor in
Canada
as well as the
US
. After "Labor Day,"
most schools, K-12 2), colleges 3) and universities start
while some colleges and universities may start at the end of August.
A new school year starts after Labor Day and ends in May or June 4).

2) “K-12” means Kindergarten to 12th grade.
Grades 1 to 6 is grade (elementary) school, grades 7 and 8 (sometimes 6) is middle (junior high) school, and grades 9 to 12 (freshman, sophomore, junior,
and senior) are high school. Note
that until some years ago, grade 7 to 9 was for junior high schools, and grade
10 to 12
, for senior high
schools.
3) Senior colleges are four year schools (freshman, sophomore, junior, and
senior) and junior colleges are two year schools (freshman and senior).
Junior colleges include community colleges and technical (vocational)
colleges. Some high school students
may take classes at colleges.
