1   School Year's End And Memorial Day (May 27, 2002)

American schools and colleges are wrapping up their school year.  Some college students are already in summer vacation and even high school students will soon be enjoying 3 months of summer vacation, with no homework Students are usually thrilled about having 3 months of vacation.  Graduating students will attend a graduation ceremony (commencement) and host a graduation party.  Some high school students and many college students have summer jobs.  Common jobs include working at restaurants, stores, companies, and farms.  Some college students have internships during the summer, or even during the school year.  These jobs give students experience in the business world and an advantage for finding employment after graduation.

Also, at this time of year,  Memorial Day* is observed (commemorated) the last Monday of May, which was May 27th this year.  It is a national holiday set aside for honoring and remembering those who served in the armed forces, especially those who died in combat.  The President frequently attends Memorial Day services at Arlington National Cemetery, a famous military cemetery located in VA, across the Potomac from Washington, D.C. President John F. Kennedy and over 260,000 soldiers rest in peace there**.   Minnesota has a smaller military cemetery at Fort Snelling. Family members often visit the graves of relatives on Memorial Day. Parades, ceremonies, and fireworks are common.
