A flock of six Red-breasted Mergansers swimming in open water just in front of
the Bald Eagle
on ice.
To our surprise, those mergansers seem not to be afraid of the bald
eagle. We wonder why they are not afraid of the eagle. One article* says,
"Eagles are present on some of our salmon streams in the Maritimes but it
appears that they are a menace to the mergansers only on streams which have long
shallow areas which have to be negotiated by flightless ducks. When have long
shallow areas which have to be negotiated by flightless ducks. When on water
over 3 feet in depth, mergansers seem to have little fear of eagles." This pic was taken on Kris' birding
Walk at
Lake Harriet, Minneapolis, MN, on April 2, 2019.
