Punxsutawney’s Phil（
groundhog (= woodchuck) ）が、冬眠の後、穴から出てきて、今後の天気の予測をする日なのです。もし、Punxsutawney’s
Phil が、自分の影を見れば、冬が、もう6週間つづきます。したがつて、Phil
は、穴に帰って、もう一眠りします。もし、
Punxsutawney’s Philが、自分の影を見なければ、冬が、終わったことになり、地上にそのままいます。この定義は、理解しにくいとおもいます。しかし、これだけは、確かです。すなわち、もし、その日、晴れていなければ、Phil は、自分の影が、ありませんから、自分の影を見ることはできません？
