Raptors such as eagles, hawks, and falcons, usually don't fly across huge lakes
such as Lake Superior because it’s hard to find places to land and enough food*.
We’ve learned from a few naturalists that raptors migrate along mountain ranges
and ridges from north to south, instead of flying over a large body of water.
Raptors know how to use wind currents such as updrafts and thermals to soar**.
Around
100,000 raptors fly over Hawk Ridge each fall. From August through November, if
the winds are right, you can see many raptors at Hawk Ridge. Hawk Ridge is an

From noon to 1:00 p.m. on 060924, during the 2006 Hawk Weekend, we saw
around 20 raptors flying over Hawk Ridge: The raptors, which we spotted, were a few
northern harriers, 5 sharp-shinned hawks, 10 bald eagles, and 6 broad-winged
hawks. I
had never seen northern harriers and sharp-shinned hawks before. "Really Awesome!"
