Q from a Japanese   050501

I didn't know Passover was observed last week until l saw some news on Passover in the paper.  Regarding Passover, I know it's one of the Jewish festivals, but I don't know what it is.  I checked some calendars, and I found all of them mark Passover.  What is your opinion on Passover? Please let me know it at your leisure.  Thx.

Passover (this one I actually know something about!)

An ancient Jewish festival celebrating the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.  The book of Exodus in the Old Testament of the Bible describes the event*.  Pharaoh was reluctant to release the Israelites from slavery, so Moses, the leader of the Israelites, performed many miracles to try to change his mind.  Pharaoh would not relent, so God told Moses to tell Pharaoh that he would kill the firstborn male of every household in Egypt.  The sons of the Israelites would be spared if they brushed the blood of a lamb around the door of their house.  The Angel of Death would see the blood on the door frame of the house and "pass over" the house without harming the firstborn inside.  The Israelite boys were spared, and Pharaoh released them.  The Israelite women had to make food for their journey on very short notice, so they had to eat unleavened bread, since there was no time to add yeast and let the bread rise.  So to this day, Jews celebrate the Passover by eating unleavened bread, such as Matzo crackers.  I like the crackers -- they taste similar to saltine crackers.  Here is a link to a popular company that makes Jewish holiday foods:  http://www.manischewitz.com/

A gave a great explanation of Passover. I also remember hearing about this but did not remember the details as well as him.

Passover is one of the Jewish festivals, but the Bible also describes Passover.  This is most likely why even Americans who are not Jewish, very often know of Passover.  Today I had a chance to ask two other Americans (C & D), who are Christians, about Passover.  The answer is that they know of Passover very well.
