An
interest in what would be antiques for the US, which has a rather short history,
led us to the Show & Flea Market. BTW, the admission was $5.
It looks like there were hundreds of vendors at the State Fairgrounds, St.
Paul. Some antiques that caught our eyes were lightning rods, (People used to
put the rods on the roof and ground to avoid lightning damage. A vendor told us
that colorful glass balls are decorations and that when the balls were broken it
showed that lightning had struck them. The rods are larger than we imagined.), a
washing machine, (which was used in the late 19th century and we
never saw it, the washing machine was made in Canada), washing boards (Some
musicians use the boards as a musical instrument.), water coolers made in Red
Wing, (Red Wing is famous for ceramics and located in Southeast Minnesota.), old
Barbie dolls from the 1950s and 1960s, old lamps, old well pumps, etc. As we
guessed, there were no antiques which are older than the US history: some
vendors may have had old antiques from Europe. We didn’t spot any antiques from
the Native Americans at the show. Most antiques look like junk if you don’t
know what the antiques worth, but they become precious for those who know the
worth.
FYI: One of the vendors told us that the city of Stillwater, MN has quite a few
antique stores. Two local antique show goers told me, “Usually you can see Coca
Cola trays at the show.”
