112 Easter Part V  Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day) & Ash Wednesday  2  (040223)

For Mardi Gras, see Letter 61, and for Ash Wednesday, see Letter 51.

This year Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) will be February 24, the eve of Ash Wednesday.   Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is also called "Shrove Tuesday" or "Pancake Day".   Before Lent starts, let's splurge on a big stack of pancakes.  It looks like eating pancakes for Shrove Tuesday is getting popular, whether or not Lent is observed.  Ash Wednesday is a big day for Catholics, as it is the start of Lent.  A lot of Catholics go to church and get ashes, which are made from last year’s blessed palm, on their forehead.  While giving you the ashes, the priest says “ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”
