Replica of the Wright Flyer (030908, see pix of the replica > Photo Gallery > Minnesota Festivals > August - September > Wright Flyer)

Orville and Wilbur Wright were successful in flying a powered aircraft called the “Wright Flyer” for the first time, on December 17, 1903 in Kitty Hawk, NC. A replica of the Wright Flyer, which was built by the Wright Flyer Project < www.mn1903flyer.us >, was on display at the Mall of America, Bloomington, MN. We found two interesting things while looking at this replica; first, the wings are made of cloth and secondly, two propellers are placed behind the wings. The photo was taken on August 29, 2003.

This year (2003) marks the 100^th anniversary of the flight. A year ago or so, we read an article describing that some organization is planning to build a full scale replica of the Wright Flyer to fly on December 17, 2003. Recently, one of our staff’s Japanese friends kindly informed us of an example of Japanese sites on a Wright Flyer. The example indicates that some students of Fukuoka Institute of Technology, Japan are also attempting to build a second Wright Flyer to fly in Japan on December 17, 2003.
