Replica of the Wright Flyer (030908, see pix of the replica > Photo Gallery > Minnesota Festivals > August - September > Wright Flyer)

Orville and Wilbur Wright were successful in flying a powered aircraft called
the “Wright Flyer” for the first time, on December 17, 1903 in Kitty Hawk, NC.  A replica of the Wright Flyer, which was built by the Wright Flyer Project <  >, was on display at the Mall of America, Bloomington, MN. We found two interesting things while looking at this replica; first, the wings are made of cloth and secondly, two propellers are placed behind the wings.  The photo was taken on August 29, 2003.

This year (2003) marks the 100th anniversary of the flight.  A year ago or so, we read an article describing that some organization is planning to build a full scale replica of the Wright Flyer to fly on December 17, 2003.  The following web site says that a replica of the Wright Flyer will be flown on that day, commemorating the 100th anniversary < >.

Recently, one of our staff’s Japanese friends kindly informed us of an example of Japanese sites on a Wright Flyer. The example indicates that some students of Fukuoka Institute of Technology, Japan are also attempting to build a second Wright Flyer to fly in Japan on December 17, 2003.  Source < >

The 100th anniversary of the flight has been commemorated on stamps issued by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) since this past April or so. < > < >
