Elections USA vs. Japan Part I (030830)

Last November, which is -- wow! -- 10 months ago or so, we had elections for U.S. senators, the state governor, and other offices such as state senators, state houses, and county sheriffs.

Election years in the United States are interesting and exciting.  A rule of thumb is that the more significant the office is, the earlier the campaign begins, and the more exciting the race. Usually the highest voter turnout is on years when the president is elected.

Candidates establish a campaign headquarters that coordinates their efforts.  Workers distribute lawn signs* (see photo: Photo Gallery > Elections) and bumper stickers, and try to persuade others to vote for the candidate by making phone calls and going door to door**.  The candidate participates in interviews and debates, shakes hands with crowds, kisses babies, and goes door to door to try to persuade voters.
