“National Night Out”     1st Tues. in August    See our "National Night Out" photos

A National Night Out (NNO) is an event to prevent crime and drugs.  The US observes the
National Night Out on the 1st Tuesday of August; for this year, it is August 5.  The event is supported by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW).

On this day community crime prevention organizations often hold block parties and other activities.  People tend to keep their porch lights on all night.*

For instance, the community where one of our staff lives will have a “National Night Out” party.   The flyer says, “Come join us and your neighbors for ‘National Night Out!’ The community and the Maplewood police** have organized fun activities such as live music, a fire truck, police officers, root beer floats, a puppet wagon, and a bagpiper.  Please join us and help keep your community a safer place and get to know your neighbors!”

One of our staff joined a National Night Out party for the first time, and he found that it’s a wonderful way to get know neighbors and police officers; plus they offered free food, drinks, and entertainment.
