Bald
Eagle (American
national bird)
(022803)
"Bald eagle" is the American national bird . It’s a
symbol of freedom and power. Its wingspan is around 7.5 feet! The eagle’s keen
eyes and dangerous talons make this bird an excellent hunter. Note: Some people
may say that their hunting ways are really greedy. They will often steal food
from smaller birds or animals if the opportunity arises. Minnesota is one of few
places where you can spot these bald eagles. This is especially true along the
Mississippi river. The bald eagles were reclassified from "endangered"
to “threatened” on the
endangered-species list in 1995. We were
fortunate to spot two bald eagles perching on a tall tree at Lake Phalen last
Sun. Here are pix
of the bald eagles. Note: It’s unusual to spot bald
eagles at Lake
Phalen, which is several
miles from the
Mississippi
and St Croix
rivers. One of our
staff from Japan was excited by seeing the bald eagles in person for the first
time; he said, “Wow! Son of a gun!
They look so cool!” J
