Japanese U says, “Wow!  Rainbow?  Ummm….  What a weird-looking rainbow!  What the heck is this? I’ve never seen anything like this!”

Answer: This is a “Sundog (Mock sun) *. A sundog appears on the right side of the sun above 3M HQ just before sunset. The real sun is behind the tree on the left. You can sometimes spot a pair of colored spots on both sides of the sun. Sundogs form when sunlight is refracted by ice crystals in cirrus clouds, which are one of high clouds  --- at or above  6000 m (20,000 feet).  This pic was shot on 060408, near 3M HQ, St. Paul, MN.
