Snowy Owl Photo 3    A Snowy Owl at sunset in Anoka County, Minnesota - our first snowy owl. We've been trying to see a snowy owl for the past several years, but we didn't have any luck until this past February. This pic was shot on February 8, 2014 when it was really cold.  Feb. 5, 2014: We read info on sightings of two snowy owls, which was posted by Pete, a birder, on the ABA (American Birding Association) web page. Early the next morning - around 7:00 a.m. - we tried to see the owls, but we failed to locate the owls. On the same day we e-mailed to Pete to ask how to locate the owls. Guess what! We're so lucky to contact him. Pete kindly took us to this place on Feb. 8, 2014. "Pete, we really appreciated your very generous help." Pete writes a great blog, Sky the BirdMan < http://skythebirdman.blogspot.com/ >. It looked like this owl got used to people. This snowy owl changed its perch every 30 minutes or so, but it only moved about 20 yards to the next perch. The owl was larger than we had thought, around 2 feet tall and very cool. We think this owl is an adult female*. Snowy owls are active during the day as well; they live in the Arctic area most of the time, where the sun never goes down in its summer months, so that they have to hunt during the daytime. By the way, we hear a Northern Hawk Owl hunt during the day as well.
*   What is the difference between a male and female snowy owl?  Snowy Owl - YouTube  Blizzard, a male snowy owl, was attacked by a mom Falcon, which was trying to keep him from her nest, and is blind in his right eye and flightless. So he won't be able to go back to the wild.
