Here is a
picture of a downy woodpecker just
before it's released, taken on 070512.
Woodpeckers use their hard tale as a third peg to balance on when they are
pecking at a tree. They have extremely long tongues with needle-like barbs on
the end so they can grab food out of trees. Their tongue starts all the way back
to
the backside of its left eye! Paul (far right), a naturalist (Osprey Expert) helps
at the event. See
how much he loves ospreys. |
