Here is a picture of a downy woodpecker just before it's released, taken on 070512. Woodpeckers use their hard tale as a third peg to balance on when they are pecking at a tree. They have extremely long tongues with needle-like barbs on the end so they can grab food out of trees. Their tongue starts all the way back to the backside of its left eye! Paul (far right), a naturalist (Osprey Expert) helps at the event. See how much he loves ospreys.    photo    jfj

Many attendees, especially kids did enjoy releasing birds after Ron banded them with the help of Paul. Ron and Paul also let the attendees hear a bird's heart beat. Ron told us that
a bird's heart beats around 400 times per minute.
