A Hoary Marmot (aka the Whistle Pig) Videos       日本語
Nature Notes from Pat's BWCA* Camping Trip (summer 2010)

Probably the most surprising wildlife encounter was with a hoary marmot just outside our tent. We got quite a close look at it but the surprising thing was the sound that it made:  a loud, sharp, bird-like whistle - a single note.  It is also called the "whistle pig" - it's actually a large member of the squirrel family. He did a bunch of strong whistles and then a bunch of weaker ones.  We could hear and easily identify him/them by sound during the rest of the trip.
This YouTube video strongly resembles what we observed with our specimen except that ours whistled:

Note: "Pat, thanks for your nature notes on the 'Whistle Pig'. Its call is cool. We've never seen a Whistle Pig." Pat is one of our birder friends.
