006 Fruit vs. Fruits (031010)
Yes, I can
see where this is confusing. "Crab apple trees have fruit" is correct. Even
though you may have many crab apples on the same tree.
It is kind
of like the word fish. There can be one fish or several fish in a pond. If you
were to say, "He ate many different fruits during the day". in this case it
sounds better to use fruits. (But I think "He ate many different fruit during
the day." is also correct)
So, I
guess in summary, for fruit the plural of the word can be either fruit or
fruits. But I think you would tend to want to use fruits more when you are
talking about different kinds of fruit and not when you are talking about all
of the same kind of fruit.
